One of the earliest DCOMs is also its most controversial. 2000’s The Color of Friendship was based on a true story and followed South African white teen Mahree Bok (Lindsey Haun) — whose family supported the apartheid system — as she traveled to Washington, D.C., in the late 1970s to study abroad.

Mahree ends up blindly assigned to stay with the African-American Dellums family, and her upbringing becomes a huge source of friction for everyone. The film includes an eye-opening scene in which Mahree explains to Piper Dellums (Shadia Simmons) the different classification names South Africans had for black people — including using the n-word.

On Thursday (August 17), California-born Haun broke out her South African accent on Instagram after all these years, inspired by Daily Show host and Johannesburg native Trevor Noah. It’ll hit you right in the nostalgia feels.
