It Took This Band 13 Years To Get Nominated For A VMA

A look back on MTV and All Time Low's love fest

Baltimore pop-punk band All Time Low have a lot to celebrate this month.

The guys drop their second documentary, Straight to DVD II: Past, Present and Future Hearts, on September 9th — but before that, they find out if they've made history for the second time this summer by winning Best Rock Video at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards.

Yes, you read that right. Alex Gaskarth, Jack Barakat, Zack Merrick, and Rian Dawson have scored their first-ever VMA nomination (since the band formed in 2003) for their fan-fueled music video "Missing You," directed by Patrick Tracy. It's up against Coldplay, Fall Out Boy (featuring Demi Lovato), Panic! At the Disco, and Twenty One Pilots.

But "Missing You" has an advantage: It was created for fans and by fans. "For hustlers/non hustler fans. Win or lose it's your guys nomination not ours," Jack wrote on Twitter. From having paparazzi ignore them on the 2008 VMA red carpet to snagging a nomination eight years later, here's a look back on All Time Low's history with the awards.

After playing the mtvU Video Music Awards Tour, the band was invited to attend and walk the red carpet at the VMAs. "We were late, so we ended up showing up right around the time all the important people showed up," Jack and Alex told MTV. "We were sandwiched between Christina Aguilera and Fall Out Boy, so naturally no one [cared] about us."
