After premiering the poignant music video for “Scars to Your Beautiful” earlier this month, Alessia Cara is continuing to promote the single’s themes of authenticity and body positivity.

On Tuesday, the 20-year-old performed “Scars” on Late Night with Seth Meyers, marking her debut television performance of the single. Fresh-faced and wearing black, she belted the song alongside a trio of backup singers and a small band, while warm purple lights illuminated the stage. The performance was intentionally minimalist; Cara wrote on Twitter last week, “Every time I perform this song, I am choosing to be 100% natural.

“It only feels right to be my true self while singing about self-acceptance,” she continued, explaining that she’ll continue performing the song with “no makeup, natural hair, and my own clothes.” It’s all part of her message that “beauty goes deeper than the surface.”
