Kanye West Stars In Francis & The Lights’s Delightfully Strange ‘Friends’ Vid

Chance the Rapper loves it, so you probably will too

Francis Farewell Starlite -- who records under the name Francis & the Lights -- earned a lot of (completely fair) comparisons to Bon Iver when he appeared on Chance the Rapper’s Coloring Book track “Summer Friends.” Now, Starlite has teamed up with his musical doppelgänger for a gorgeous new song, “Friends.” And because this is a “more the merrier” kind of collaboration, he invited noted “real friends” enthusiast Kanye West to join in as well.

The accompanying video, which was released Thursday and appears to be shot in one take, opens on a non-rapping Kanye on a bleak soundstage, looking somber and wearing an awesome jacket. The camera later pans out to Starlite, who busts out some delightfully strange choreography before joining Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon for an even more delightfully strange synchronized dance.

The video’s release was hyped up this week by Chance the Rapper, who tweeted after its debut, “#friendsvideo is literally looking at all my influences at once. Thank you @andthelights for being so inspiring.”

“Friends” was cowritten by ex–Vampire Weekend member Rostam Batmanglij, who also produced the track alongside Ariel Rechtshaid, Cashmere Cat, and Benny Blanco.
