You may not recognize Jamila Woods’s name straight away, but you’ve likely heard (and loved) her voice. The singer-poet stole the shine on Macklemore’s “White Privilege II,” Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment’s “Sunday Candy,” and Chance the Rapper’s Coloring Book standout “Blessings.” Now, Woods is gearing up to release her first full-length project, and she’s shared a promising taste of what’s to come with the Chance-assisted “LSD.”

Despite what its title suggests, the song isn’t an ode to psychedelic drugs, but to Woods and Chance’s hometown, Chicago (LSD stands for the city’s Lake Shore Drive expressway). Over breezy production courtesy of Odd Couple, Chance’s playful flow blends seamlessly with Woods’s wistful vocals as she sings, “I won’t let you criticize my city / Like my skin, it’s so pretty / If you don’t like it, just leave it alone.”

Woods also shared a statement about the single (via Pitchfork), detailing her complicated relationship with the Windy City. “A lot of people get Chicago wrong,” she wrote. “I’ve developed this protective feeling about how we’re portrayed, and at the same time I’m acutely aware of the issues we face and the root causes of these issues. It’s important to me that there’s not just one story told about our city. ‘LSD’ is an ode to Chicago, a song for the complicated love I have for my city.”

Woods’s debut album, Heavn, releases July 11 and includes features from Chance, Donnie Trumpet, and Saba.
