She isn’t running for president just yet, but Alicia Keys is clear about where she stands on immigration and refugee aid.

The singer stars in Let Me In, a new short film that urges Americans to empathize with those forced to flee their homes. Written and directed by Jonathan Olinger, the film flips the script on the usual conversation about immigration and depicts a war-torn Los Angeles whose residents must flee for Mexico.

Keys plays a mother trying to bring her two children safely across the border. Her new song, “Hallelujah,” also features prominently in the 12-minute film.

"There are more refugees in the world today than at any point in history,” reads the film’s tagline. "And half of them are children.”

“I want us all to imagine if we were the refugees, if we were the ones torn from the arms of our families and loved ones,” wrote Keys in a statement. "While some seek to stoke the flames of division and turn us against our fellow neighbors, we’re here to make the case for love and compassion. How would we feel if it were happening to us?”
