Wale Continues Drawing Inspiration From The Classics

He samples Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth for his new song ‘Reminisce’

For his new single, "My PYT," released last month, Wale called on a Michael Jackson classic, sampling "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)." On his latest loosie, the appropriately named "Reminisce," the MMG rapper samples another classic.

Immediately after pressing play, hip-hop fans will recognize the saxophone from Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth's "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)," their 1990 breakout (which sampled "Today" by Tom Scott and the California Dreamers, which was itself a cover of a song by Jefferson Airplane). Over that sax, Folarin raps relentlessly for the next two minutes and change, before fellow DMV native Phil Ade brings things home.

This is another sign that we're in the midst of New Music Season for Wale. In addition to May's "My PYT" and today's release, this week he also dropped "Her Wave" and linked back up with Rick Ross and Meek Mill for "Make It Work."

His new album, Shine, is on the way.
