To be a fan of Ms. Lauryn Hill is to wait. It’s been 18 years and counting since she released her first and only solo album, 1998’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, and when she curated and headlined a night of Pan-African music and art at Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre on April 15, she didn’t take the stage until well into the following morning. MTV correspondent Doreen St. Félix was in the audience reporting on the show, and the long wait for Ms. Hill’s arrival gave her time to think — about the biblical story of Lazarus, the complexities of solidarity and fandom, perfectionism as self-destruction, and what divas owe us.
