'No Requests Live': The Lauryn Hill Experience

A sneak preview of the MTV Podcast Network's latest production

To be a fan of Ms. Lauryn Hill is to wait. It’s been 18 years and counting since she released her first and only solo album, 1998’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, and when she curated and headlined a night of Pan-African music and art at Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre on April 15, she didn’t take the stage until well into the following morning. MTV correspondent Doreen St. Félix was in the audience reporting on the show, and the long wait for Ms. Hill’s arrival gave her time to think — about the biblical story of Lazarus, the complexities of solidarity and fandom, perfectionism as self-destruction, and what divas owe us. When does an artist’s right to work on her own timetable cross the line into disrespect for the audience that believes in her? Who speaks for the babysitters, the ushers, the DJ who didn’t plan out a six-hour set? In this sneak preview of the forthcoming MTV podcast "No Requests Live," Doreen talks to music editor Jessica Hopper about the enigma of Lauryn and why you should never skip dinner before one of her shows.
