After teasing his new dreadlocks on Instagram over the weekend, Bieber debuted the style at the iHeartRadio Music Awards Sunday night.
While reactions from fans were mixed, one thing was clear — the media's muted reaction to his new look was probably a result of the backlash that Fashion Police host Giuliana Rancic received for criticizing Zendaya's 2015 Oscars look.
A video clip from backstage appears to feature Justin defending his new style, saying "it's just my hair." It's a similar argument he made for Kylie Jenner last summer when she faced criticism for wearing cornrows.
The thing is, though, is that it's not "just hair" and Bieber's consistent lack of understanding seems to underscore how much he has yet to learn about cultural appropriation.
He can start with Amandla Stenberg's "Don't Cash Crop On My Cornrows" video. Then, let's hope, he'll shave his head and start fresh.
