Mary Jane Nixed from 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'

Mary Jane Watson may have played a central role in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" trilogy, but she won't show-up in the rebooted version until 2016.

Yes, there were set photos of "The Descendants" star Shailene Woodley floating around from "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," but those scenes have either been axed or will be saved for the third movie, "Superman: The Movie"/"Back to the Future"/"Kill Bill"/"The Lord of the Rings" style.

According to a new interview in Entertainment Weekly (which we became hip to thanks to Superhero Hype), Woodley understandably isn't super stoked about the news, but she gets the reasoning behind it.

"Of course I'm bummed," she said. "But based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film."

Sony just announced release dates for "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" (or whatever it ends up being called) as well as a fourth film in the new franchise that kicked off with director Marc Webb's "The Amazing Spider-Man." In the comic book mythology, Peter Parker famously watches helplessly as love interest Gwen Stacy is (spoiler?) killed by The Green Goblin (which if you want to get really nuance-y about it, was technically Spider-Man's fault via his attempt to save her).

Whether it will play out exactly like that with Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone (as Gwen) and company in the rebooted films remains to be seen. A new rumor is circulating that Felicity Jones may be playing yet another Spider-Man love interest, The Black Cat, so M.J. is gonna have to get in line. (Jones' name even sorta sounds like The Black Cat's alter-ego, Felicia Hardy, no?). Of course, rumor had it that Black Cat was going to show-up in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man 4," which never got made.

Whenever Mary Jane Watson turns up, we can only hope she'll utter her famous line:

She may not be hanging around the Spectacular Spider-Man (a great title for the next reboot) as soon as we thought, but Woodley does have something "spectacular" up her sleeve: the festival circuit hit "The Spectacular Now."

Let's all reflect on the news of Mary Jane getting bumped for Gwen Stacy by moshing in front of our computers to this song by the band who named themselves... GWEN STACY.
