'Veronica Mars' Kickstarter Closes with $5.7 Million

The "Veronica Mars" movie Kickstarter campaign ran for a month, despite meeting its initial fundraising goal of $2 million in a single day, and finally closed out on Friday ... with nearly three times the loot goal and a record for most pledgers on Kickstarter ever.

With 91, 585 backers in all, "Mars" creator Rob Thomas made the Double Fine Adventure and its prior record-holding 87,142 look like a chump has-been with no friends. Okay, not really, but Thomas did bamboozle the cinematic universe by collecting a cool $5,702,153 smackers to produce the long-awaited following to the cult TV show.

So, where will all these dolla dolla bills go?

"It’s all going to the budget of the movie. We get to make a bigger movie the more money we make," Thomas told Wired. "The back end of the movie is divvied up like any other movie that gets made. The stars of the show will get a piece of the back end; the producer will get a piece of the back end. Clearly Warner Bros will own a big part of it. And I hope Warner Bros does well on it, because if not, they won’t make any more of these. I think there’s a scenario where everybody wins: where Kristen and I get to make the movie we’ve been hoping to make; where fans get to see the movie; and where Warner Bros makes money on it as well."

Needless to say, the studio granted Thomas and company the green light soon after the campaign met its goal, and he's been busy developing the project ever since, spilling this detail or that along the way and reeling in certain cast alums.

Most importantly, as of yesterday the script for the "Veronica Mars" movie is now complete (eep!).

Thomas previously shared a glimpse at a script segment involving the former flames Veronica and Logan but noted that he'll have to ditch some of the f-bombs at some point to keep things PG-13.
