'Life of Pi' Hits 3D Again ... This Time, in Chalk

Ang Lee's big and beautiful 3D "Life of Pi" adaptation hit DVD and Blu-ray this week, and to celebrate the arrival of Pi and/or Richard Parker coming to your TV, the movie took to the streets. An American street chalk artist by the name of Tracy Lee Stum was charged with recreating one of the film's loveliest scenes on the pavement at L.A. Live.

Stum and her chalk-slinging team spent three days painting away at the graphic project, and it was finally finished on Tuesday, March 12 — not coincidentally, the same date that "Pi" discs hit shelves. Win.

The display features that critical moment of one-ness with nature Pi experiences when a giant whale emerges from the deep blue sea and leaps over their raft. The end result is bananas: It actually looks like the whale is emerging from the totally flat sidewalk.

"I'm glad we could recreate that today and get some of that dynamic motion going," said Stum. "Just like the film, my 3D chalk art makes you feel like you're part of the scene, like you're really there."

The piece will show until Saturday, March 16 at L.A. Live. As Tracy Lee Stum said, "It's a femoral artform. It's not meant to last. It's a kind of temporary, kind of performance oriented piece, and it's great to come down and check it out while it's in progress." That Coldplay background music is probably optional to the viewing experience, FYI.
