Ricky Gervais Will Try to Upstage 'The Muppets'

Hey, if anyone can do it, it might be everyone's favorite former Golden Globes host.

The man who once ran "The Office" is in talks to get things started as the human star of the still-untitled "Muppets" sequel, according to Heat Vision.

The details of Gervais' character, like those of the sequel's plot itself, are being kept under wraps, though it's known that he would be playing a lead role equivalent to that of Jason Segel's in the original "Muppets." There's no word on whether this role will require Gervais to sing, though we can't imagine director James Bobin would allow anything otherwise.

This isn't Gervais' first run-in with Kermit, Miss Piggy and the gang, as he filmed a cameo for "The Muppets" that ended up on the cutting room floor (or in the recycle bin -- however movies are actually edited these days). Apparently it made quite the impression ... or everyone involved has since forgotten about it and Ricky's potential involvement in the sequel is just a coincidence.

Gervais would be joining Ty Burrell, who's been cast as an Interpol agent in the European-flavored (and probably crime-themed) sequel. If he signs on, this will be the "Night at the Museum" scene-stealer's first lead role since 2009's "The Invention of Lying."

Production on "The Muppets" sequel will commence in January with a look toward a possible release date of November 2013 (though we think Summer '14 might be more likely). Meanwhile, Ricky Gervais will not be hosting the 2013 Golden Globes ceremony, which will be held on Sunday, Jan. 13.
