"Ruby Sparks" follows Calvin Weir-Fields (Paul Dano), a novelist struggling with that condition most feared by creative-types: writer's block. Since he's having trouble finding his muse, he decides to make one instead — in the form of a pretty lady named Ruby Sparks (Zoe Kazan). The young scrible is soon striking up a romance with this fictional character, which creates all sorts of mind-boggling — and often very charming — existential conundrums.

Believe it or not (and why not believe?), the movie works, thanks to the sincere performances by the two leads (Kazan also wrote the smart screenplay) and surefooted direction by the "Little Miss Sunshine" team of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris.
