As America attempts to deal with last Friday morning's Colorado shooting, which left 12 theater patrons dead during a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises," Warner Bros. is dealing with the far less important but no less delicate task of deciding how to respond to the attack on screen as well as off screen.

And, according to Variety, the first major change being made in response to the massacre in Aurora is the removal of an eerily similar scene from the upcoming film "Gangster Squad."

Starring Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, "Gangster Squad" is a period piece set in the Los Angeles of the 1950s, a time when the police force was hard at work trying to keep the city from being overrun by transplanted East Coast mafia cabals. The film, which has already finished production, is set to arrive in theaters on Sept. 7.

Now, though, Warner Bros. has decided to call for a last minute reshoot of one pivotal scene. The issue? The sequence is one "in which agents spray machine-gun fire into a crowded movie theater from behind the screen."

And that strikes far too close to home for Warner Bros., the studio behind "The Dark Knight Rises." As a result, they've decided to scrap the entire sequence and replace it with a brand new, unrelated scene.

The decision is no doubt a costly one for the studio, but it's also the right one.
