The movie follows Calvin (Paul Dano), a young novelist who  finds inspiration in a new character has created, a young woman named Ruby Sparks (Zoe Kazan) who is also in love with the author. When Ruby comes to life in Calvin's apartment, they have to adjust to having their relationship in the real world.
