'Mission: Impossible' Becomes Mission Accomplished At the Box Office

The first box office returns from this week's new movie releases are in and according to The Hollywood Reporter, "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" was the clear winner, taking in a combined $8.6 million over Tuesday night and Wednesday.

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" also had an impressive debut, earning $1.6 million on Tuesday night and an additional $3.6 million yesterday for a two-day tally of $5.1 million. "The Adventures of Tintin," meanwhile, lagged slightly behind in its debut, racking up $2.3 million in its first day of release, good for fifth place behind holdovers "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked."

The fourth film in the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, "Ghost Protocol" seems poised to lead the box office this weekend and become Tom Cruise's first big blockbuster hit since 2005's "War of the Worlds." The film, which is the first live action effort from former Pixar director Brad Bird ("The Incredibles"), has earned over $85 million overseas in its first week of action; added to the $17.1 million taken in at IMAX previews since Friday, "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" has already earned more than $105 million worldwide.

Still, that's not as impressive as "The Adventures of Tintin's" worldwide dominance; despite the film's fifth place start domestically, the Steven Spielberg/Peter Jackson animated adventure is already an international blockbuster, as the "Tintin" series of graphic novels from Belgian artist Herge are much more popular in Europe than they are here. As a result, "The Adventures of Tintin" was released last month in most of the world, which helps account for its $239 million international box office tally.

Here's the full top five for Wednesday:

1. "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" -- $5.1 million

2. "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" -- $4.3 million

3. "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" -- $3.6 million

4. "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" -- $3.5 million

5. "The Adventures of Tintin" -- $2.3 million
