Next Factor: 'Something Borrowed' Star Colin Egglesfield

Colin Egglesfield may look familiar, but that's probably just because he has a unique resemblance to Tom Cruise.

The Midwestern actor took advantage of those dashing looks in his 20s when he modeled for the likes of Versace, Calvin Klein and Armani. He continued putting them to good use for several years on the popular (but just cancelled) soap "All My Children" and on the CW's ill-fated "Melrose Place" reboot.

This weekend, he brings those high cheekbones and grey eyes to the big screen in "Something Borrowed."

In the movie, he's Dex, the guy who comes between buds (Kate Hudson) and Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin). But just because he sleeps with his fiance's best friend, doesn't mean he's a bad guy.

After talking to him, we can confirm: Colin's not such a bad guy himself.

In "Something Borrowed," Dex seems like a good guy, but, at the end of the day, he's still the kind of guy who would sleep with his fiance's best friend. It feels like the audience should hate him, yet they can't. How does that work?

That was the tricky thing with my character… It brings up a lot of good questions. Just because he's following what he truly feels is right in his heart, does that make him a bad person? Is it better just to be honest and hurt people in the short term so that in the long term you'll have what you believe, what's going to make you happy for the rest of your life?

Have you ever been in a situation like Dex where you have to ask yourself how did I get here and why am I still here?

I've been in relationships where I definitely was in them longer than I should have been because I just didn't want to hurt the person I was with or I decided to stay and see if something changes or maybe in a couple months I'll feel differently. I was just too afraid to be honest about my feelings and ultimately it turned out to be a horrible situation because I wasn't honest from the beginning.

Other than this or "Melrose Place" or "All My Children," have you ever been in a love triangle?

(Laughs). Not that I consciously knew of.

Speaking of "All My Children," the long-running show was recently cancelled. How did you feel when you heard?

It was sad to see. It was like a family for three years being on that show, a lot of great people and a lot of talented people. It's just a shame to see something that's been around for so long -- unfortunately because of the economics of the business -- people are not just watching as much as they used to. It's really, really sad.

The end of "Something Borrowed" clearly sets up a sequel and, of course, author Emily Giffin wrote a second book. Are there plans to do a second movie?

We're all signed up for the sequel so hopefully enough people go see this one which will then warrant us going out to make the second one… The next one films in London which would be absolutely a blast to be able to film over there. I think because the books have such a following people will really come out and support this one so we can go out and make the next one.

What was your first acting gig?

I had to jump in a bed with Jennie Garth on a show called "The $treet" and all I was wearing was my Calvin Klein boxers. I jump in bed and I have one line. There's a guy who was in love with her so the camera is on an answering machine and this guy is leaving a message and the camera pulls back and you see me jumping into the bed with two glasses of wine, giving one to Jennie Garth. Then I ask her who this guy is. Of course, it being my first acting job, I practiced the whole night before and did line readings and taped myself… But when I showed up on set, they were just like, "Dude in the underwear, just grab the glasses and jump in."

How were you first discovered?

I had just graduated college and I getting ready to go to med school when I heard on the radio about this talent search. On a whim, I went to see what it was all about because I always wanted to travel the world and see what was outside of my small little farm town outside of Chicago. I got hooked up with this agency in Chicago and next thing I knew I was shooting Ralph Lauren campaigns and Versace campaigns down in Miami and then I was flown to Milan, Italy. I was doing fashion shows for Giorgio Armani and Versace and Dolce & Gabbana and all these other crazy designers I'd never heard of and going to dinners with Donatella Versace and Elton John. It was just crazy, so surreal. I got to live in Paris and London and Tokyo. Then I ended up moving to New York City and that was when I just decided I wanted to give acting a shot, so I jumped into an acting class and started auditioning – 4,000 failed auditions later, here I am.

So if you weren't acting, would you have been a doctor?

I don't know. My dad is a gynecologist so I might have gone into the family trade.

What did you do with your first Hollywood paycheck?

I bought some Ramen noodles because it was like $30. My first Hollywood paycheck: I paid rent and bought groceries.

You have that whole Tom Cruise thing going, but do you have an acting inspiration?

Yeah, definitely he's someone whose career I aspire to, to have a lot of the roles that he's had. Daniel Day-Lewis is another actor I hold in really high esteem.

Do you get recognized on the street much?

When I was on "All My Children," people would occasionally recognize me. In New York City, on the subway. I played the son of Erica Kane and I tried to poison her, and one time this woman just looked at me on the subway. She was just glaring at me the whole time and when we got to her stop she walks up to me and says, "I know who you are and I don't like what you did to Erica." And then she walked off the subway, but she was serious. People take their soap operas seriously.
