DVD 123: 'Battleship,' 'Terminator' Anthology, and 'Quadrophenia'

In our new weekly column, we give you the lowdown on the weekly top three essential DVDs and Blu-ray releases.

We've got a bumper crop of goodies this week that span the ages -- well, the decades. If you want one last gasp of summer fun, the new "Battleship" Blu-ray will have you shouting "Mahalo!" right along with Rihanna. On the other hand, if you're a terminal completist, the new "Terminator" anthology from Best Buy will do you right. Last but never least is this week's Criterion release of "Quadrophenia," the ultra-hip movie about mods and rockers, all set to the tunes of The Who.

This summer blockbuster follows the explosive adventures of a fleet of naval ships that are attacked by a sinister unknown force. The crew's gotta band together and blast the baddies to smithereens to save the world, and that includes pop star Rihanna making things go boom. Yes, "Battleship" is based on the Habro board game, but with tons more explosions and fun.

This 2-disc package comes with the Blu-ray and DVD, as well as an UltraViolet digital download. The Blu-ray Hi-Def  package offers a lotta bang for your buck (pun intended). You can use your tablet to access special interactive features, like a picture-in-picture "All Access with Director Peter Berg" video commentary made up of interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. The other featurettes examine shooting at sea ("Engage in Battle"), Berg's directing style ("Commander Pete") and the extensive visual effects. There are also interviews with the cast, a tour of the USS Missouri and Berg's alternate ending "previsualization."

Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Michael Biehn, Edward Furlong, Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin

Directors: James Cameron, Jonathan Mostow, McG

Studio: Warner Bros. Home Entertainment

One young man's dead end life offers few delights, except his mod friends, his beloved scooter, and the music of The Who. When he sets his hopes on a bank holiday, the despair that follows the exuberant trip may just plunge him too far down to surface again.

This crisp Blu-ray offers the typical special features, but like a true Criterion Collection release, it comes with juicy extras for the mod in you. That includes two cool French news episodes from the '60s about mods and The Who, on-set footage and interviews from the BBC series "Talking Pictures" and a 36-page booklet that offers extracurricular reading by critic Howard Hampton and more.
