'The Dark Knight Rises' Wins a Slow Weekend

"The Dark Knight Rises" managed a second weekend crown in a row, easily fending off new releases "Step Up: Revolution" and "The Watch". Still, it was a tough weekend for studios overall, as the box office was down an estimated 43 percent from last weekend, and a staggering $42m less was earned for the top twelve versus last year . Was it The Olympics? The aftermath of the Aurora tragedy? Whatever the reason, audiences largely skipped heading to the multiplexes, setting up a fairly interesting "Total Recall" vs. "The Dark Knight Rises" battle next weekend.

Diving deeper into the results, "The Dark Knight Rises" has grossed over half a billion dollars worldwide, and there are still plenty of international markets waiting for it to open. So it would seem that a billion dollar result is still possible, though it's tracking around $25m behind "The Dark Knight" domestically (after ten days of results).

The new releases faced a largely uninterested general public this weekend, with "The Watch" in particular suffering. The production budget on Ben Stiller's buddy comedy was a hefty $65m, which means it's almost guaranteed to lose money theatrically for Fox. The Lonely Island crew (director Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone, Andy Samberg) previously brought "Hot Rod" and "MacGruber" to the big screen, films that didn't cost (or make) much theatrically, but which have since earned devoted fans. Will "The Watch" struggling hurt their long term prospects? You'd have to guess "naaaah," but it's now an open question.

Also coming in below expectations was "Step Up: Revolution". It was the worst showing by a "Step Up" film yet, and the trend continues downward for the franchise, at least domestically speaking. Could the lack of lead continuity have finally caught up to the series, six years after Channing Tatum launched the brand? Possibly. The good news is that "Step Up 2 The Streets" and "Step Up 3-D" were international monsters, so Summit Entertainment can realistically hope for a similar result here.

Which brings us to next weekend, as sci-fi remake "Total Recall" faces off against "The Dark Knight Rises". If "The Dark Knight" falls 60 percent again, as it did this weekend, then Colin Farrell might be end up in the winner's seat. We'll find out together!
