Surprise Renewal 'Whitney' Gets a New Showrunner

A new Friday night time-slot won't be the only change sophomore NBC comedy "Whitney" sees next fall. The sitcom will be getting a new showrunner, as Betsy Thomas steps down from the position. Thomas will be replaced by sitcom veteran Wil Calhoun, perhaps best known for his time on "Friends," but who also had a hand in the recent network failures "Kath & Kim" and "I Hate My Teenage Daughter."

"Whitney" was not particularly well-received by viewers or critics, which is why the pick-up for a second season was so surprising. Although the 8 PM slot on Friday nights isn't necessarily a vote of confidence on the part of NBC (neither is pairing it "Odd Couple" style with "Community," which will also be sporting a fresh showrunner), star and creator Whitney Cummings will get a second change to make her show a hit. Towards the end of its first season, the show did exhibit signs of improvement, and a slight uptick in the ratings once it was removed from the cluster of intense programming on Thursday nights. But if improved ratings are NBC's goals, Friday nights might not be the best place to make that happen. "Whitney" and "Community" will be followed at 9 PM by "Grimm," which managed to carve out a surprising niche last season on Friday nights. NBC seems to be going for some kind of Island of Misfit Toys thing on Friday nights, but it's hard to imagine a universe where all three of these wildly different shows might share an audience (although, to be fair, Troy and Abed probably watch "Grimm" religiously).

"Whitney" joins "Community" on the growing list of shows going into next season with new directors at their helms, a list which also includes "The Office," "Smash," and "Cougar Town."
