’30 Rock’: Looking Ahead to Next Season

If Kim Jong-il had his way, the seventh season of 30 Rock would see Jack and Liz finally hooking up. "Don't over think it, writers!" Count your blessings now that we don't live in a world where Kim Jong-il could hold such an influence over the sitcom scribes. Even if the Moonlighting curse never gets a chance to take hold over Jack and Liz, there's still a lot in store for next year.

The season finale of 30 Rock brought us the vow renewal of Avery and Jack. Liz knows that's never a good idea, but she's agreed to officiate anyway. The problem is that Jack and Diana still have mad chemistry together. While trapped in North Korea, Avery and Scott Scottsman developed a relationship based on a made-up finger-tapping code. When the moment comes to "speak now or forever hold your peace," neither Scott nor Diana are in a position to defend their love, so Avery and Jack do it for them. They're so competitive that neither of them was willing to give up, even though they just got married because Avery was having a baby. By the power vested in Liz from Estonia, she pronounces them divorced. Next season, we'll either see Jack and Avery reconcile (they're so perfect for each other!) or Jack and Diana will finally get a chance together.

Criss is (rightfully) worried that Liz will bail, but when Liz has a moment with a plant in a stroller, she realizes that she's ready for a baby. Criss sells his hot dog van, VanDerBeek, and tells Liz, "I don't wanna wait for our lives to be over," even though he's never seen an episode of Dawson's Creek. James Marsden's Criss is as good of a boyfriend that Liz has ever had and I really hope those two crazy kids make it. When Liz asks for parenting advice from Jack, he acknowledges that she doesn't really need it, but proceeds to give her the 25 Pillars of Motherhood anyway.

Hazel's still around, much to my chagrin, and moves in with Kenneth. Don't go for her, Kenneth. She's psycho-crazy instead of ha-ha crazy. Jenna didn't have a lot to do in this episode, but she's got her upcoming nuptials with Paul next season. Tracy finds a black role model in Tyler Perry, with a little help via Dr. Cornel West and Rosa Parks. Ah, some things won't ever change.

Also, I'd like to wish a very happy birthday to Tina Fey today! Thanks for bringing this weird and lovable show into our lives.
