Will Slumdog Herald the Rise of Bollywood in Hollywood?

Does the mostly Indian-made and inspired sensation of Slumdog Millionaire's 81st Academy Awards sweep -- including nabbing the Best Picture Oscar -- herald a new era? The rise of Bollywood in Hollywood? Will we soon see Hindi musicals cohabiting with Hollywood blockbusters?

Well ... don't let your curry masala get chilly while you wait. As the Bollywood hit-making machine currently exists, it's not too likely to overtake our theaters anytime soon.

Why?

Here are a few reasons:

1. Slumdog is not Bollywood

Though Slumdog is definitely deeply Bollywood flavored, most of Mumbai's mass-produced musicals have been made with Indian sensibilities to stir an Indian audience. That means possibly perpetuating caste and gender roles and portraits potentially more unsettling and unfamiliar to Western sensibilities than Indian Oliver Twists or chai wallas. Alongside more universally palate-pleasing themes of love and courage, Slumdog is an Americanized export.

2. Too rich for regular consumption

Diners from different lands often have different tastes and tolerances, especially for decadent treats. What may provide many Hindi film fans with a satisfying serving of romance may eventually prove a syrupy overdose of melodrama for many American audiences. True, some Bollywood films focus on other weighty topics, but star-crossed love is still the norm.

3. A massive musical attack

In the heyday of silver screen song-and-dance spectacles, the world shouted its love for movie musicals from their Fiddler on the Roof tops. Then the tide turned and the world turned its back and declared musicals a dead breed. Now thanks to the triumphs of Chicago, Moulin Rouge, Sweeney Todd and others, the genre lives again. Still, it's a delicate balance producers might need to pace themselves to maintain. A sudden Bollywood flood could prove too much musical for mainstream moviegoers.

What could be in the Darjeeling tea leaves...

1. Movie outsourcing

Some economic media mavens have speculated that Hollywood filmmakers may start outsourcing or at least relocating their projects to Bollywood. (Could that mean High School Musical 4: Calcutta Crush?)

2. Bring on the Bollyplex

If not screen by screen with Hollywood releases, at least let's hope Slumdog spawns more Bolly venues. Driving an hour and a half to a shoddy, acoustically challenged cinema on a slummy industrial strip to see Namastey London because it's the only screening in the state? Unacceptable. And unprofitable. Hmm ... Does anyone have a cozy, fixer-upper cinemaplex they're looking to unload? For about $300?

3. The hybrid of the future

We loved Slumdog. Some of us also appreciated (and wished for) the Slumdog shuffle finale. Let the Bollywood-Hollywood lovechild champion a new generation of charismatic multicultural epics with global heart, unregulated passion, and high-spirited, addictive dance routines.

I'm off to Google Bollywood dance class locations. Or, maybe I'll just wait for Wii Bollywood.
