Review: Definitely, Maybe is Worth Seeing

Just to get the recommendation portion of this review out of the way Definitely, Maybe is worth seeing. The film is a worthy Valentine's Day release, and it's a worthy addition to the romantic comedy genre too. Far more satisfying than recent efforts such as 27 Dresses and Fool's Gold, Definitely, Maybe has a little something for the thinking romantics out there.

The storyline is the first thing that elevates the film. Ryan Reynolds plays Abigail Breslin's father -- she asks for a bedtime story consisting of how he met her mother (which I think is also the name of a hit series on CBS). I've spoken to folks who get annoyed with Breslin (you know who you are) but she plays an adequate cute little girl here. Reynolds walks us through his romantic escapades as Breslin tries to unlock the mystery of her mother and father's past.

Three main romances are presented. The parts are played by Elizabeth Banks, Rachel Weisz, and Isla Fisher, respectively. I'm not going to clue you in on how the story develops, because that's the good part, but I will doff my cap to the lack of formula in Definitely, Maybe. Each of the three actresses is likable, each of them gives you reason to hope she is Abigail's mom.

The film is far more cute than funny at times, but this wasn't a deal breaker for me. Better to be cute than idiotic. Reynolds is also very strong here... I've never gotten why he's not a bigger star. Heck, we've suggested him for ThunderCats and as the new Jack Ryan in the last month alone. What more can we do for you Ryan? Okay, stop by the office, I'll buy you lunch.

I can't tell you how many times I've had the "Why aren't there more good romantic comedies?" conversation. Seems like a simple genre to make a decent film in. However, the average romantic comedy is generally lacking either comedy or logic. Perhaps because the budgets are so low more get greenlit than should? I don't know. 60 Minutes should investigate.

The ancient Egyptians passed down the three rom-com rules a few thousand years ago. They go something like this:

1.They Meet

2. They Fall in Love

3. Montage

4. Problems Arise

5. But it All Works Out - Happily Ever After!

From these stone tablets a few thousand movies have sprung forth. The terrible ones follow the rom-com commandments too closely, with little joy or comedy presented. The better ones, like Definitely, Maybe have just enough going on to keep you interested. So why not? Lasso your special friend and head to the movies. It's the season for sweet lovin'.
