Watch SpaceX’s Falcon 9 Rocket Make History

'I think this is a critical step along the way towards being able to establish a city on Mars,' SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said.

On Monday (Dec. 21), spacecraft manufacturer SpaceX successfully launched -- and landed -- its Falcon 9 rocket in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

"It's a revolutionary moment," SpaceX CEO Elon Musk told reporters. "No one has ever brought a booster, an orbital-class booster, back intact.

ABC reports that "[SpaceX] has previously attempted the feat three times, coming close to landing on a bullseye on a floating barge." This time, the company nailed it -- the rocket landed on target and on land.

Musk is hopeful that the successful landing the Falcon 9, which was carrying 11 satellites into orbit, will pave the way for reusable rockets, which could drastically reduce the cost of space travel. "I think this is a critical step along the way towards being able to establish a city on Mars," Musk told reporters. "That's what all this is about."
