Cancel All Your Plans – The Best Meteor Shower Of The Year Is Tonight

ALERT. ALERT.

Sunday (Dec. 13) marks the beginning of the Geminid Meteor Shower, which has been called the "best meteor shower of the year." It's basically a huge rave in the sky, right outside your door.

It's estimated that 100-150 meteors could appearing per hour, which enter the Earth's atmosphere while they're zipping around at 78,000 mph. The (very bright) light that emits from the meteors is also pretty interesting: "The Geminids show up as mostly white and yellow, with perhaps 10% of Geminid meteors showing red, blue, or red," Slooh reports.

According to NASA, "Geminids are named because the meteors seem to radiate from the constellation of Gemini. The shower lasts a couple of weeks, with meteors typically seen Dec. 4-17, peaking near Dec 13-14." The shower can be seen from the Northern and Southern hemispheres.

According to Accuweather, the show should begin around 9:00 p.m, but optimal viewing will be at around 2:00 a.m. ET on December 14. ET on December 13. If you can't catch the shower outside your window, starting at 8:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, you can peep the live stream here, via Slooh.
