There was one particular aspect of Erykah Badu's But You Caint Use My Phone mixtape that initially left a lot of listeners confused: Two songs sounded a lot like they featured Drake -- but they didn't.

In reality, it was an Aubrey impersonator, named ItsRoutine, on “U Used To Call Me” and “Medley: What’s Yo Phone Number/Telephone (Ghost Of Screw Mix).”

Was the bait-and-switch because she couldn't actually get Drake on the project?

"Not necessarily," Badu told Pitchfork. "I talk to Drake once a week. He’s my friend, and I told him about ItsRoutine, and he laughed and made a joke that he didn’t want these guys taking up his tea time."

The "tea time" is a reference to the Toronto native's 2014 track "Days in the East," when he rapped: "Remember one night I went to Erykah Badu house, she made tea for me/ We talked about love and what life could really be for me/ She said, 'When that sh-t is real, you just know.'"

And though he wasn't on the tape, it was actually Aubrey who deserves some credit for Badu getting back in the zone for creating But You Caint Use My Phone. She says she remixed his "Hotline Bling" -- which was the first song she did for the tape -- to try to communicate with the generation of her teenage son, Seven.

"It was Drake’s song that helped me reboot the music hard drive inside of me," she explained. "Once I embodied that, I was off and running because I knew how to use the frequencies to fit my tastes, and I was able to manipulate Ableton and sound effects and voice boxes and all these things."
