Valiant Announces New 'Quantum and Woody' Series...Without Original Creators

A new ongoing "Quantum and Woody" series is on its way from Valiant Comics -- without the original team who made the comic famous.

James Asmus will be scripting the new "Q&W," with Tom Fowler on art; the comic, about the misadventures of a pair of best friends-turned-superheroes, will debut in July. The book will also feature the return of "The Goat," a popular "sidekick" to the team that even had its own "inaction figure."

Asmus commented on the new series in a press release:

"In all of comics, there's no other book that mixed style and substance quite like Quantum and Woody. I was willing to literally kill someone for the chance to write the relaunch for the new Valiant Universe. I might have. Those first days after I got the call are a blur. But Quantum and Woody isn't (just) a superhero book – it's action-comedy, it's family drama, it's a boys-meet-goat tale that tugs at the heartstrings."

The choice of the new creative team may be potentially controversial, as the title has been so heavily associated with its original team/creators Christopher Priest and Mark Bright. I had always assumed that Priest/Bright held some sort of rights to the characters, since the 1997 series has such a "creator owned" feel and were not part of the original Valiant properties. However that might not be the case, or perhaps they did hold some rights but sold them back to Valiant.
