'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' Gets a Graphic Novel From Vertigo

DC has announced that in 2012, they’ll be releasing a two-part graphic novel adaptation of Swedish novelist Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (aka The Men Who Hate Women). No talent or official release date have been announced, however the bestselling novel and its sequels—The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest—will be getting their own follow-up adaptations in 2013 and 2014 respectively.
The series makes up what was dubbed as the Millennium Trilogy after Larsson’s death, and have gone on to international sales success and three Swedish Language films starring Noomi Rapace as the emotionally brittle, kickboxing, elite hacker Lisbeth Salander, who teams up with a left-wing journalist Mikael Blomkvist to unravel far reaching conspiracies that bring together serial killers, international sex trafficking, political corruption, and a brutal enforcer with an inability to feel pain. I haven’t read the source material and am only familiar with the series through the three increasingly dire and terrible films released over the last few years. Salander isn’t so much a character as a series of weirdly fanboyish tics and elaborate retribution fantasies against the brutal sexual crimes committed across the series.
Having said all that, I can’t help but be excited about December’s remake of the first film, helmed by David Fincher, which may be able to do more with its climax than have one character off reading while the other has the plot explained to them by a villain, Scooby Doo-style. Likewise, the graphic novels may have a chance to elaborate more on the material in a way that’s more compelling than what was pulled from the books to put in the original trilogy of films.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo will be released sometime in 2012 from Vertigo.
