The 10 Coolest Things That Happened During 'Acts Of Vengeance'

By Valerie D'Orazio

The anxiously-awaited "Acts Of Vengeance Omnibus" from Marvel Comics finaly hits stands this week. The massive tome will collect a portion of the epic crossover from 1989-1990 that spanned over 20 titles and featured a jaw-dropping roster of heroes and villains. In an age where some people complain that comic events don’t feature enough “cool stuff,” Acts of Vengeance provided more than its share to readers. Here’s ten of the coolest things that happened during Acts of Vengeance:

10. Crazy Battles

Daredevil Vs. Ultron?! The Punisher Vs. Doctor Doom?! Typhoid Mary Vs. Power Pack?! One of the key features of “Acts of Vengeance” was villains battling against heroes whom they’ve never fought before...the theory being that the unfamiliarity would work in the villains’ favor. The result: some very unlikely slugfests!

9. Special Guest-Appearance By Abraham Lincoln

You need at least one of these in a proper event.

8. The Destruction of Avengers Island

Once the artificial island of an insane scientist and his Hydro-Men creations, the Avengers later moved in and called Hydro-Base home. That was, until Doctor Doom’s robots blew it up. The end of an era.

7. Magneto Vs. Red Skull

You’d better believe Magneto would have a beef with unrepentant Nazi Red Skull. One of the more vicious and personal battles in “Acts of Vengeance”

6. The Beginning Of Scarlet Witch’s Dark Side

The events of Acts Of Vengeance started Scarlet Witch down the dark path of power and madness that would be explored more fully in the West Coast Avengers “Darker Than Scarlet” storyline, and be revisited in the House of M event.

5. Cosmic Spider-Man

Spider-Man gains the powers of Captain Universe during Acts of Vengeance. Ooookay, technically that isn’t quite canon, as the story took place in a “What If?” Acts of Vengeance tie-in. But it’s still cool. “Cosmic” + “Spider-Man” is always cool.

4. Breakout at The Vault

A prison break is never a pleasant thing...but a supervillain prison break is even worse!

3. And The Real Bad Guy Is...

I’d tell you but then I’d have to kill you. You’re better off reading the Omnibus and finding out for yourself.

2. The Return of Psylocke

Psylocke returns to the scene...as an Asian ninja?! Those pesky Hand scientists with their brainwashing and body-modification techniques. But hey, she got a “psychic knife” and an awesome costume by Jim Lee out of the deal, soooo...

1. The Formation of The New Warriors

We get our first glimpse of The New Warriors as Night Thrasher, Marvel Boy, Firestar, Namorita, Speedball, and Nova decide to help Thor out against his battle with the Unstoppable Juggernaut. If the destruction of Avengers Island was the end of one era, this was the beginning of a new one...as Marvel stepped boldly into the 1990s.
