'Amazing Spider-Man 4' Casting Call: Joe Manganiello As Venom

by Brett White

I know that doing a casting call for "Amazing Spider-Man 4" five years before it gets made—and before two preceding sequels even hit theaters—is a bit of a stretch, but the cosmic confluence of events surrounding this new bit of MTV News footage from San Diego's Comic-Con International and the possible resurrection of a Venom solo movie set in Marc Webb's new Spider-Verse warranted a full-on post.

In the interview, which can be seen after the jump, "True Blood" star Joe Manganiello reveals that he's still up for playing a superhero—despite not getting the "Man of Steel" gig—as long as the project tries something different.

"I want to do something that's a real deconstruction of the genre," Manganiello told MTV News' Josh Horowitz. "There's so many superhero projects out there that it's almost like they're becoming normal, so I want to do one that just flips it on its head and makes it crazy. I want to make the 'Fight Club' of superhero movies." And that's why Manganiello would be perfect for "Venom"—and it'd even be a role that he's played before!

Much to my surprise, I discovered that Manganiello played Flash Thompson in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" film from 2002. Right? Yeah, that was him. And what role does Flash Thompson play in the comics nowadays? Venom. Flash lost both of his legs during a tour of duty in Iraq, leaving him a changed man and unable to fight for his country. Then the government stepped in and armed Thompson with the captured Venom symbiote, which they weaponized and bonded to Thompson, turning him into the new, black-ops version of Spider-Man's deadliest foe.

It's quite a crazy coincidence that the character Manganiello played in a bit role has gone on to become the exact type of character it sounds like he wants to play. Flash Thompson's tenure as Venom, as written by Rick Remender, focused as much on his abusive relationship with his father and his self-destructive tendencies as it did with fighting bad guys (and might I add that those bad guys were maniacs unlike any that have been seen on the silver screen).

Now, I know that there's a new Flash Thompson in the rebooted continuity played by Chris Zylka. And I also know that he knows about Flash's role as Venom. But couldn't Manganiello star as an older Zylka? Or couldn't they just make a Manganiello "Venom" movie without caring about how it ties in with anything else? Or maybe they throw some gray in Manganiello's hair and have him play Zylka-Flash's father? None of this is likely to happen, but it's crazy how all of this news hit on the same day.
