Joss Whedon Says 'Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.' Is About 'Character'

ABC premiered the trailer for "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." during the network's upfronts presentation in New York and, unsurprisingly, it looks to be one of the best new shows in the fall TV line-up. During the upfronts presentation of his show, Joss Whedon opened up about what will make a series based on S.H.I.E.L.D. work for all audiences.

"Everything has to push 'character' forward, including action. We don't want 'spectacle' characters, we want some spectacle that addresses character. We always want the two to mix," Whedon said.

Also don't worry whether "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." will work with the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. That's one of the big draws of the show, and Whedon promises both the TV and film worlds will line up.

"We're absolutely on top of all the movies. We never contradict, replicate -- we will be flowing in between them, maybe occasionally we'll throw something in that foreshadows [or] echoes but we're very much beholden to the Marvel Cinematic Universe," he said.

Whedon and star Clark Gregg echoed similar sentiments when speaking with outlets during the Upfronts. "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." will air Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
