Get ready to see a whole new side to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." ABC premiered a trailer for the upcoming fall series during their New York upfronts, and the show looks like a fitting addition to the world Marvel has worked so hard to create. In fact, Deadline reports that the show owes it's entire existence to bonus footage from "Marvel's The Avengers," according to ABC Entertainment Group chief Paul Lee.

"Last spring, [Disney chairman] Bob Iger sent us some bonus footage from 'The Avengers' with a simple question, 'Is there a show here?'" said Lee during ABC's upfront.

One of the most exciting elements of the upcoming show is that it marks the return of Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson. Though he was thought to have died during the events of last summer's "Marvel's The Avengers," Coulson is back and better than ever for... some unexplained reason. ABC might not be revealing that plot point any time soon, but Gregg has no problem promising people that "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is a show they should tune in for.

"Agent Coulson represents the people who don’t have superpowers, the guys who actually can be killed -- or at least seem to be and yet come back sometimes," he told Entertainment Weekly. "Marvel has such a lock on how to do really incredibly visual affects and stunts that we’ve got stuff on our show that I just don’t think we've seen on TV before."

As the trailer so proudly touts, "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." comes from Joss Whedon. Though his brother Jed Whedon and Jed's wife Maurissa Tancharoen are actually showrunning the series, Gregg promised that "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." has the appeal of any Joss Whedon show.

"If you love 'The Avengers,' if you love any of Joss Whedon's work, you're going to absolutely love the show," he said. "It's about these people living in a super world dealing with being human. You see these superhero movies and you see the superheroes struggle but you don’t see how humans do in a world like that. That's what will draw people in. It's so human. And it's so super and awesome still."

Joss Whedon praised Gregg's portrayal of Agent Coulson during the upfronts, saying that Gregg is "an actor so talented even I couldn't kill him." When Whedon spoke to the central theme of the show, he said he "had a story to tell [about how] to be an ordinary person in an increasingly extraordinary world."

Hey, we're just happy that we get to watch Phil Coulson fight bad guys every week starting this fall. "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." will air Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.
