Does Len Wein's 'Swamp Thing' Screenplay Offer Hints About 3-D Movie Plans?

Until more is known, it's impossible to answer any of those questions. What we can look towards, however, is a relatively recent "Swamp Thing" screenplay written by Len Wein, the character's co-creator.

MyPDFScripts has a copy of Wein's screenplay dated December 10, 2003. Whether this script is still being considered for Silver's planned 3D adaptation is unknown — but if this script is still in play, then "Swamp Thing" fans have very little to fear.

First and foremost, the fact that Wein wrote the screenplay should tell you that the story is pretty faithful to the comic book series and features plenty of inside references. There is a character named Veitch, for instance, as an obvious nod to writer and illustrator Rick Veitch's lengthy run on "Swamp Thing." Additionally, memorable characters such as Dr. Anton Arcane and others have important roles to play, offering more authenticity to the screenplay.

Then, of course, there is Swamp Thing himself, who is introduced by way of a vicious battle with an alligator. (Spoiler: the alligator loses.) Swamp Thing is described as standing at "7 feet tall, its body composed of MUD and MOSS and primarily ROOTS THAT CONSTANTLY MOVE AND WRITHE IN A CHANGING CONFIGURATION as if with a life of their own."

As Splash Page editor Rick Marshall pointed out in conversation yesterday, the effects on Swamp Thing sound an awful lot like Davy Jones' tentacles in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies. That's pretty darn cool, if you ask me.

I'll spare you further details for a couple of reasons. For one, the screenplay is a lot of fun and a truly great read. More importantly, however, is the fact that this could still be the version of "Swamp Thing" that Joel Silver is working on. If so, we're in for a very entertaining movie.
