Chris Columbus Offers 'Welcome to Hoxford' Update, Uncertain If He'll Direct

“You never know,” Columbus told MTV News, “You never know where that vibe is going to take you or where you’re going to want to go.”

The film, based on the IDW comic book series Templesmith, tells the story of a violent battle between werewolves and convicts in a privatized hospital for the criminally insane. Though blood and guts is not necessarily what one associates with Columbus, the director explains that a great story is more important to him than being family-friendly.

“I just want to do movies that I’m excited about," said Columbus. "I’m not that egocentric that I need to surprise people. I just need to keep myself excited so I can keep doing it -- and that was part of the reason of doing ‘Beth Cooper’. Just to continue to reinvent.”

Columbus compares his take on “Hoxford” to what Sam Raimi did this summer with “Drag Me to Hell”, in terms of breaking away from the mainstream, and likens his “Beth Cooper” to a return-to-form companion piece to his first work, “Adventures in Babysitting”.

“I just love the idea that he went back after ‘Spider-Man’ and did that. It’s great to see filmmakers going back and making the kind of movies they started out doing," said Columbus.
