How Will Justin Bieber's 'My Worlds Acoustic' Rank Against Great Unplugged Albums?

While you're out fighting off other people getting the best sales on Black Friday, know that you'll be able to end the day mellowing out with some acoustic plucking and the voice of Justin Bieber. The 16-year-old Canadian singer will be dropping My Worlds Acoustic the day after Thanksgiving exclusively at Walmart, and it will feature unplugged versions of tracks from Bieber's first two releases as well as a new track called "Pray."

It's not the first time Bieber has unplugged (he regularly breaks out the acoustic guitar during live events and has played unplugged versions of songs on television shows), nor is it the first time a major artist has gotten a little bit strummier for an album. But it isn't just another project for Bieber, who is putting out My Worlds Acoustic at least in part to prove the he has the skills to sustain a long and fulfilling career.

"I really think that I did an acoustic album because there's a lot of haters out there that say, 'Justin Bieber can't sing. His voice is all Auto-Tuned,' " he told MTV News during a recent conversation. "And there's a lot with production, it kind of drowns out your voice, and it takes away from the singer, over the synths and everything."

My Worlds Acoustic recalls another Canadian pop sensation who crafted an acoustic album based around one album. In 2005 (a decade after the original album's initial release), Alanis Morissette put out Jagged Little Pill Acoustic, a complete unplugged re-imagining of her breakout album. Though it really has no reason to exist (especially 10 years after the fact), it's actually a lovely, well-crafted collection of songs that highlights how excellent those tunes always have been. Bieber's album could reveal the same thing. Without all the bells and whistles, he would have to rely on the melodies -- which are, of course, extremely strong. Look for My Worlds Acoustic to be an important step for Bieber.
