Fangirl Passion Fuels 'Vampire Academy,' 'Fifty Shades' Jewelry Designer

The "Vampire Academy" movie might finally be getting made, but fans of Richelle Mead's series have been obsessing over its story for well over five years. Jewelry designer Janet Cadsawan was one of those fans, and she combined her passions for Richelle's world and for creating beautiful jewelry into a line for enthusiasts like her.

"The books are amazing--,it's an incredible story. After I read all the books, I just called up [Richelle] and I said, 'Is anyone doing your jewelry because these tattoos will be perfect jewelry and I can just see it on people,'" Janet told Hollywood Crush of her official "Vampire Academy" and "Bloodlines" jewelry collections. "Anyone who's a fan, they want the story to continue, and the only way they can do it is by symbols or wearing a piece of jewelry, wearing clothes or getting a tattoo or something like that because they really identify with the story."

Richelle's two series aren't the only fan-favorite properties Janet has tackled. She's also designed jewelry based on "True Blood" (some of which was worn in the HBO show), Kristin Bauer van Straten's "Out For Africa" documentary, Deborah Harkness' "All Souls" trilogy, Rachel Caine's Morganville novels and, up next, a fine jewelry line based on E.L. James' "Fifty Shades of Grey." The last is the property that Janet is most excited about, as she has the official license for all three of the "Fifty Shades" films and hopes to have some pieces included in them as well.

The "Fifty Shades" jewelry collection will include 25 to 35 pieces when it debuts in the spring, though more items will be added closer to when the film comes out. It will be available online as well as in places like Neiman Marcus and other "luxury stores," and some of the pieces will be much more expensive than others. As Janet explained, Christian Grey is a billionaire, so "you have to have billionaire-y jewelry out there."

"It's going to be wearable. It's not going to be in-your-face, X-rated stuff. It's going to be beautiful erotic jewelry," Janet said of the collection. "I tried to get as racy as I possibly could. Everything that is going to get made from the book has to actually be used in the book. Even though there's toys and stuff, I'm sticking to what Christian actually used and/or what Anastasia used. It all has to be approved by E.L."

She added, "Whatever I'm making is definitely because E.L. loves it. I mean, she wouldn't approve it if she didn't love it or wore it herself."

The "Fifty Shades of Grey" jewelry collection will be all silver and platinum to stick with the title's theme. There will be some jewelry released for men as well, and Janet said her dream is to design something for Christian's character in the film. "I'm pretty sure I'll get something in there, so I'm not too worried about that," she said. "Even if they're just Christian Grey cufflinks, that's what I want to do. I want to have something on Christian Grey. It's another one of my fantasies."

There's also a chance that Janet's work will appear in the "Vampire Academy" movie. She said that she and the film's producers are "talking" and those involved with the project haven't said no to her yet.

"They want to stick as close to the books as they possibly can, and my jewelry has stuck with the descriptions in the book," Janet said. "If we can overlap it, they've already told me that they would consider it."

Janet has tackled the properties that she cares about as a "fangirl," and she said the one she's always dreamed of working on is Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" books. Back in November, Starz closed a deal for "Battlestar Galactica" showrunner Ron Moore to adapt the series for the cable channel. Janet said she would be thrilled if she ever had the opportunity to be involved in that project.

"I would give somebody maybe my kidney to do jewelry for them. I am such a fan of her universe and her vision, I would drop what I'm doing and move somewhere and do kind of like the 'Lord of the Rings' thing just to be a part of it," she said. "I'm a total fangirl too, so I understand when people want to buy something that symbolizes something that is so awesome like 'Outlander.'"

The "Vampire Academy" film is due in theaters on February 14, 2014, while "Fifty Shades of Grey" is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2014. "Outlander's" air date has not yet been announced.
