'Vampire Diaries' Star Ian Somerhalder Dishes On Damon's Evolving Relationship With Elena

Let's face it, Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) is no white knight. Sure, he's saved his fair share of damsels in distress (we're looking at you, Elena!), but when it comes down to it, we all know he'd rather be biting their necks. Yet, with Stefan (Paul Wesley) enjoying a ride on the dark side in season three of "Vampire Diaries," will Damon be forced into the role of a hero?

We caught up with Ian during Comic-Con, we got all the deets on a potentially kinder, gentler Damon and what it will mean for his relationship (or lack thereof) with Elena (Nina Dobrev).

"I would say anti-hero," Ian mused (instantly making us feel better because we prefer our Damon with a little edge!). Ian explained that Stefan's decision to ditch the good guy role in favor of wreaking havoc with Klaus (Joseph Morgan), will cause a lot of headaches for Damon.

"For two seasons he's tried to get his brother to do what he wanted him to do, which was eat everything--every sorority girl--and destroy everything in his path," he said. "Now Stefan is running around doing that but with a guy that Damon hates, who tried to kill Damon, and he's stuck in Mystic Falls with this girl that he's in love with who's 150 years his junior, who doesn't want him anyway." Well, when you put it like that...

Adding to Damon's frustration? The fact that the girl who "doesn't want him anyway" (even though she DID kiss him!) is, last we checked, still hopelessly in love with Stefan.

"It's his brother's girl, so he can't do that anyway," Damon said. Wait a minute, so now that Elena's finally forgiven him and locked lips he "can't do that"? Where was all this nobility hiding?!

Before we could totally lose it though, Ian gave us some more insight into Damon's evolving relationship with Elena.

"The dynamics happening between Damon and Elena...they sort of like poke fun at each other, they jab at each other, she gets things from Damon that she doesn't get from Stefan. He makes her smile. I mean, yes, he killed her brother; yes, he destroyed her life...but he makes her smile," Ian said. It's okay if you want to stop reading now to simply swoon--we certainly are.

As far as season three is concerned, we're feeling a whole lot better about where Damon is headed. Far from a white knight, it looks like we're about to get a dark prince and really, it doesn't get much better than that.
