Chicago Police Ordered To Release Dashcam Vid Of Teen Shooting

Laquan McDonald Was Shot 16 Times

A judge ordered the Chicago Police Dept. to release a squad car dashcam video from October 2014 that shows an officer shooting 17-year-old McDonald 16 times, with a number of the shots reportedly coming as the high schooler lay on the ground. City officials had declined to release the clip for months because of an ongoing federal grand jury probe into the case, in which police union officials claim the officer was acting in self-defense.

Police said McDonald, who is black, had PCP in his system and was acting erratically before the officer, who is white, opened fire when the teen reportedly refused to drop a small 4-inch knife. McDonald's family and witnesses said the teen was walking away from the scene when he was shot; the incident took place two months after the police-involved killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson. The city approved a $5 million settlement with McDonald's family in April. The judge ordered the video released by Wednesday.

3 Dead, Hundreds Of Hostages Taken In Mali Hotel Terror Attack

Islamist gunmen using stolen diplomatic vehicles stormed the luxury Radisson Blu Hotel in Mali's capital city, Bamako, early Friday morning (Nov. 20), taking 170 hostages and killing three. A senior security source told Reuters that some hostages were released after being forced to recite verses from the Koran. It was unclear at press time what group the gunmen -- who reportedly entered shooting automatic rifles and shouting "Allahu Akbar" (God is great) -- belonged to. The hotel was slated to host a large delegation of UN workers helping to negotiate a long-in-the-works peace deal in Mali. At press time 80 of the hostages had reportedly been released.

House Passes Refugee Bill Pausing Program

Despite a threatened veto from President Obama, the House passed a bill on Thursday pausing the resettlement program for Iraqi and Syrian refugees pending certification from federal agencies that the refugees don't pose a security risk. The bill passed by a 289-127 vote, with 47 Democrats joining Republicans for a two-thirds majority that might allow the House to override a presidential veto. Before last Friday's Paris terror attacks, the administration had pledged to resettle 10,000 Syrian refugees next year, but the ensuing backlash has convinced some Democrats in Congress to vote out of fear of angering their constituents, according to Buzzfeed. The bill's future in the Senate is unclear, as Minority Leader Harry Reid has promised to block it. As previously reported, refugees already undergo an intense, 18-24 month vetting program when attempting to enter the U.S.

You Can't Do That On Television: CNN's global affairs correspondent Elise Labott was suspended for two weeks on Thursday after she expressed her dismay on Twitter (see below) about the House vote on refugees. Because Labott is a reporter and not a commentator, she is required to comply with CNN's "neutrality principal."

NBC Got Trumped: After inviting Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to do the "Hotline Bling" dance on Nov. 7's "SNL," NBC has now reportedly offered equal time to the rest of the crowded GOP field. The 12 minutes of free air time is slated to start next week and will allow the candidates to "air their own content at specific times on stations where they requested time," according to CNNMoney. Though the offer will allow NBC to comply with the FCC's "equal time" rules, none of the candidates have been offered "SNL" spots.
