Prom Dress Inspiration From Lupita Nyong'o, Rita Ora, And More

We are fully in prom mode here at MTV Style, even though we attended our own proms many moons ago. While we've brought you dresses for different price points, an entire outfit for under $100, and nail art perfect for your prom night, you may be in the market for something a little more familiar. Some of our fave celebrities wear prom-appropriate dresses on the red carpet all the time, so why not look to them for inspiration? Their duds, of course, tend to be designer and costlier than what most students want to spend on prom looks, so we found some similar alternatives. Peep them all below!

Lupita Nyong'o was the queen of the red carpet this year, especially at the Academy Awards, where she wore this "Nairobi Blue" Prada gown. The best part of Lupita's dress, as Emma Stone is well aware, is the swingy skirt. This dress from Nordstrom ($298) nails the color and the flowy skirt, but provides more coverage on top. You will not be able to stop twirling—what could be better?

If you watched the MTV Movie Awards, you know that Ellie Goulding looked gorgeous in not one, but two white gowns. While the one she wore for her performance might be a bit much for high school, the one she wore on the carpet is prom-perfect. A full-length white dress is a lot of white material to take care of at prom (also, might scare the crap out of your date #weddingbells), so this shorter option from ASOS ($151) is the perfect alternative—it's got the cutouts and the color, but is more party appropriate.

Taylor Swift wore this sparkly, chain-mail Gucci dress to the 2014 Grammys and, TBH, we've been thinking about it ever since. This dress from Nordstrom ($278) has a similar silhouette as Taylor's and is just as delicate. It also comes in black, so you have sparkly options.

Rita Ora brought the old school glam to the MTV Movie Awards with her plunging black dress and sideswept waves—as far as romantic prom looks go, this one is a winner. Rita's gown is a little too low-cut for most dress codes, so we found one that covers a bit more ($131), but features the same scalloped sleeves, color, and length.
