Blondes Have More Fun (At The 2012 VMAs)
Holy bleach! Holy beach! Blonde and tan was the theme of this year’s VMA red carpet. In the spirit of healthy competition we’re going to play a little three-on-three. I’ve grouped the ladies into two teams (based on their lip color, of course): Team Red and Team Nude. And while Team Nude is without a doubt the most visually striking, I think Team Red’s polished, old Hollywood look may lead them to victory in these Blonde vs. Blonde games. Let’s start with Team Nude:
TEAM NUDE: PINK

Pink looked like, well, herself. Her style hasn’t changed much since she swapped pink locks for blonde ones oh-so many years ago, but that’s cool, she has a thing that works and she’s stickin’ to it. Her smoky eye makeup looks great and her lipstick color was spot on. It’s really hard to find the right lip color for the tan skin/white-blond hair combination without looking freakish, so it’s best to go with some version of your natural lip color with a little gloss. This is exactly what Pink did and it looks great.
TEAM NUDE: MILEY CYRUS

Miley Cyrus, or rather, mini-Pink! Man-oh-man I hope these two coordinated their matching looks the night before while talking on rotary phones and painting their toenails; somehow I don’t think that happened. I love Miley’s new ‘do, even though this hair-in-the-air version isn’t my favorite look. Her lashes are to die for, but her lips are too salmon-y. She should have taken (another) cue from Pink and opted for a more neutral lip color, especially since she went with such bold brows. Which, for the record, I love.
TEAM NUDE: KE$HA

I feel like this is the most put-together we’ve seen Ke$ha in a while and for that she gets a gold star. This is a harsh look, with the long white-blond hair and dark eyes, but I don’t think we should ever expect anything soft and girlie from Ke$ha. She looks pretty and not too over-done. Above all else she isn’t wearing any tribal face paint, which is a step up.
Ok, on to Team Red:
TEAM RED: RITA ORA

Hello, Rita Ora, aren’t you a vision! Those shiny ruby red lips compliment her hair and skin color impeccably. She maybe should have touched up her roots, after all it was her first VMAs, but she’ll surely be forgiven in light of her perfect brows and sultry lashes. Rita is without a doubt the MVP of Team Red.
TEAM RED: DEMI LOVATO

Demi Lovato looks like a California queen with her newly blonde beach waves. She went with a matte berry red, perfect for her dark, rock and roll outfit choice. Had Demi sported a wet, blood-red look like Rita, she may have looked a little goth, which don’t get me wrong, would have been awesome, but probably not the look she was going for.
TEAM RED: TAYLOR SWIFT

Taylor Swift never makes huge variations with her beauty choices, but honestly girl, I get it, I’m a creature of habit too. I love her dramatic cat eye, but with stick straight hair and long bangs, a softer lip may have suited her better and been more age appropriate. On the other hand, her makeup looked perfect with the ponytail she sported during her performance! Also, Taylor, as a fellow pale woman I commend you for embracing your paleness.
