OK. Couple of things about Joseph Gordon-Levitt that you should know: a) he is the man b) I met him at the 50/50 New York premiere (the movie comes out TODAY! Go see it, it rules [truly]) and he was VERY NICE (read: handsome! Also, well dressed. AND way taller than you'd think!) and c) I interviewed him over the phone five years ago as he strummed a ukulele in the background and my relationship with string instruments has not been the same since. Seriously.

ANYWAY, whatever, I know it's weird for some OLDS among us that JGL was Tommy in '3rd Rock...' and that tiny-infant-baby-child in 'Angels In The Outfield' and there are certain things you can't un-know like what he looks like as an 11-year-old with Hanson hair BUT it's been a while and he is definitely a man now (see: suits in Inception and for a couple of us the Cobra Commander costume omnom...).

To further the point (haha I think I am maybe making the point that if you're a hot dresser you're a grownup? IDK falalalalalala logic fallacies... I AM STICKING TO IT) this issue of Blackbook Magazine, in an editorial aptly entitled 'Introducing the Many Faces of Joseph Gordon-Levitt,' shows the California native in what has to be the most EXPERT layering with mixed prints and jumbled textures and interesting silhouettes that I've seen since the Japanese stormed asymmetry and polka dots in the early '90s. Really really.

SO DAMNED BOSS.

So the cover is just OK. Whatever. Rothko-ish Gucci sweater (which I don't LOVE only because mohair makes me gag), straightforward Marc by Marc shirt. Patterns, nothing new going on with the collar. Some moire-ing with what looks to be a fine-wale corduroy jacket which is why this wouldn't necessarily have been my cover select but whatever. OH, I do however, like the rounded edges on the patch pockets and think the gathering at the waistband is fantastic because it's hard with pile weaves and people don't usually bother. Now this is about the time things get really good.

OH. HERRO.

I would pretty much fall over myself ogling any dude in a MCQ black trench that fit him this beautifully. And I HEART that he's rocking a Pendleton Woolen Mills vest over a Woolrich Woolen Mills shirt. Also, this sends me into a deeeeeep spiral about how ANY AND ALL throwback Japanese designs for American Woolen Mills would look great on JGL because he is so lean, taut and pretty.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM. WOWOOWwowowowwowOOOWowowow. A thick, knit, double breasted, notched lapel cardi with a navy plaid Margiela blazer UNDERNEATH with a long-placket buttoned sweater UNDERNEATH THAT (Paul Smith) AND ANOTHER MARGIELA with the collared shirt? Yes please. All the time. SO MANY POINTS OF INTEREST.

AND THEN WHA HA HAPPA WAS... Seriously, game over. So, in my super draconian opinion, only 6% of all the men with hands and eyeballs in the entire world can get away with a polka dotted shirt. And I am enraptured with the fact that it cleverly echoes the nubby yummy tweedy mocha goodness of the Burberry Prorsum coat. GUH. Look at his waist. GET REALLY IN THERE AND JUST GAWP AT IT. This jacket fits this man's torso like a dream. And you know he's lissome enough that even from the back it doesn't ride up like certain jackets do on normal mortal dudes to where they look like they're wearing some sort of saddo fuggo bolero. I love everything about all of this a lot. Stylists rule. Blackbook NAILED IT. And in the final image below, where I too am CRYING that it's over, I would go ahead and sit with how his shirt cuff looks with his watch band and sweater cuff and think about life. And how this is not plastic bags floating in the wind because: barf BUT ALSO MOSTLY 'CAUSE THIS is honest-to-goodness rare, delicate and magical.
