The Definitive Ranking Of The Scariest Moments In 'The Flash' History (So Far)

Thanks for the nightmares, CW.

If you've been watching "The Flash" lately, then you've probably noticed how gosh darn scary it's gotten as of late. But, truth time? This show has always been relatively great at crafting frightening moments.

"The Flash" is far from one of the scariest shows on television, but amidst all of the optimism and the heartfelt speeches, this superhero show has managed to create some truly terrifying moments.

Here is the definitive ranking of the 10 scariest moments on "The Flash" so far...

The particle accelerator explodes.

OK, so we all knew Barry would survive the particle accelerator explosion, but it was still pretty scary to see that giant explosion and subsequent wave come from S.T.A.R. Labs. Add in a bolt of lighting to Barry's body and this was a scary (and inexplicably magical) sequence.

King Shark grabs Barry by the head.

King Shark just straight-up grabs Barry by the head like he's just some action figure to break apart or something — and it is so weird and it is so awesome and it is so scary. Never has Barry felt so small or his head so fragile.

Rainbow-Raidered Barry fights Oliver.

Not wanting either side of an epic fight to get hurt is seriously stressful. That being said, I'm not sure which is more unsettling: see Barry and Oliver legit fight one another or see Barry so not himself. TBH, it might be that latter element that makes this fight in last year's "Arrow"/"The Flash crossover so scary.

Barry travels through time.

Time travel might not fall into the traditional "scary" category, but it's still pretty freaking unsettling — both for Barry and the viewers at home. Sure, it was great to know that Cisco had a chance at surviving now that the timeline had been reset, but this changed everything.

Team Flash watches Gorilla Grodd kidnap Caitlin.

The CW

"The Flash" utilizes the first rule of any great horror film in only letting us get the occasional glimpse of Grodd in his introductions. This sequence from "Gorilla Warfare," which has Team Flash working out that Grodd is back in business and that he is controlling Caitlin — only to see the giant gorilla following her in broad daylight via surveillance camera — is so incredibly creepy.

Team Flash creates a singularity above Central City.

Whoops. Guys, this thing was SCARY. A swirling, seemingly unstoppable vortex pulling people into its maelstrom? Terrifying. Having Barry fly straight into it? Quite the way to end a season.

Reverse Flash breaks through Team Flash' barrier.

This season 1 scene takes on a whole new meeting given what we know about the Reverse Flash now, but it's still a nerve-wracking sequence. Especially given the knowledge that Reverse Flash — aka Eobard Thawne — was in total control of this entire situation. He could have killed any one of the people in this room. (Except Dr. Wells, of course.)

When this aired, it did something similar to the recently-aired "Enter Zoom": introduce a villain so powerful and so scary, we seriously worry for the fates of the characters we love.

Gorilla Grodd traps Joe in his sewer lair.

Gorilla Grodd is SCARY and anyone who says differently is just fooling himself. Just ask Joe West. That man has a sensible degree of fear when it comes to the giant, telepathic gorilla. Guys, Jesse L. Martin just really sells this scene.

Harrison Wells kills Cisco.

The CW

If there's something "The Flash" does well, it's emotion — and this scene of Wells stabbing Cisco through the heart with his speedster arm was that much scarier for the way we had grown to care about these characters. It wasn't just scary; it was straight-up horrifying. We didn't want to believe that Wells could do something like this to Cisco, and Carlos Valdes sells the heck out of these scene. Cisco is terrfied, and "The Flash" has rarely been so scary.

Zoom breaks Barry.

Um, I still haven't fully recovered from watching Zoom pommel Barry so badly that he literally breaks his back. Maybe, with time and the perspective it brings, we will see nuance in this scene (a la the Reverse Flash stuff) that makes it slightly less scary. But, for now, this sequence is straight-up terrifying. *Moves to Earth-3*
