Pearl Jam's Opening Acts Have Punk Flavor

X, Iggy Pop, Frank Black, Spacehog, and Mudhoney are among opening acts touring with Pearl Jam this summer.

The list of opening acts for Pearl Jam's summer tour is beginning to read

like a who's who of punks that still have enough swagger in their step to

scare an audience into submission.

Pearl Jam announced on Friday that recently reunited Los Angeles punk

legends X, former Pixies frontman Frank Black, alt-rock hero Iggy Pop,

grunge pioneers Mudhoney and power-poppers Cheap Trick will be among the

rotating roster of opening acts on their summer tour of North America.

Glam-rockers Spacehog will also open a few dates, as will up-and-coming

punk bands Goodness and Murder City Devils.

Pearl Jam's shows in the Northwest, as well as concerts scheduled for New

York, Washington and Boston, all remain without announced opening acts.

In an interview Thursday with SonicNet Music News, X singer Exene

Cervenka noted that she had played before similar-sized audiences at folk

festivals over the years but was still excited about joining the tour.

"It's always fun and exciting," she explained, "and it's gonna be a short

set--pretty powerful and fast-paced."

For some Pearl Jam fans, the bills sound like a dream come true. Lansing,

Mich., resident and Pearl Jam fan Joseph Clerk, 22, was especially excited

that Iggy Pop would be performing at the East Lansing show on Aug. 18 at

Breslin Arena. "Iggy got his start in the Detroit area," Clerk explained

in an email, "so it'll be a homecoming show of sorts. I can't wait!"

Others, however, are getting an education in the history of punk rock. On

the Usenet newsgroup alt.music.pearl-jam, a forum for people to

discuss their favorite grunge band, fans traded info about the tour and the

opening acts. A poster identified as Matthew Lowerr wrote, ". . . anyone

care to tell me who the hell Frank Black is?"

Lowerr's question was quickly, and correctly, answered.
