A free-to-play MMO set in the Marvel Universe that looks a lot like Marvel: Ultimate Alliance? Sign me up.

The Gazillion-developed MMO is being spearheaded by Diablo creator David Brevik for the PC. The action-RPG will allow players to take on the role of any one of a number of Marvel heroes as they attempt to take down the villainous Dr. Doom who has gained possession of the Cosmic Cube (or what Avengers movie watchers might know as the Tesseract).

Here's the story:

The Cosmic Cube is a device of untold power capable of changing the very fabric of reality at the whim of its possessor. The brilliant but malevolent Dr. Doom has the Cube, and with it he aims to reshape the world in his own image. Determined to succeed where the Cube's previous wielders have failed, Doom has lined up villainous allies to prevent the super-heroes from interfering. Can you unravel Doctor Doom's sinister plan and stop him before it's too late?

That story is by longtime Marvel writer Brian Michael Bendis who's spent the better part of the last five years or so writing The Avengers and with an unbroken run on Ultimate Spider-Man. The game's official site promises locations from the Marvel U as well as randomly-generated environments. Right now, a roster of 18 characters have been revealed including the usual suspects like Iron Man, the Hulk, Spider-Man, and Captain America.

Currently, Marvel Heroes has no release date, but we'll keep our ears to the ground for more news.
