'Battlefield Play4Free' Opens Its Doors To All

"Battlefield Heroes" was and is fun, but it's a World War 2 setting. That's so 2002. Today ushers in the launch of Electronic Arts' latest entry in its Play4Free initiative: "Battlefield Play4Free." The game brings a more realistic look that "Heroes" as well as a modern combat setting, which ought to keep fans at bay until "Battlefield 3" arrives later this year. Check out the launch trailer after the jump.

Any trailer that ends with some dude walking away from an explosion in slow motion is a win. It may be trite, but it always looks badass. The trailer also shows off some of the first-person gameplay and a fair bit of jet-based dogfighting, alongside your usual pre-rendered action footage.

The visuals may not measure up to the disc-based "Battlefield" games, but hey... it's totally free. You just head over to the official website to set up your soldier and download the client, and then off you go.

The game supports 32-player matches in conflicts between U.S. and Russia factions. It's a weird sort of "Best of the 'Battlefield' Series" mash-up, with updated versions of maps from "Battlefield 2" and the class-based character progression of "Battlefield: Bad Company 2." In true "Battlefield" fashion -- and as you can see in the trailer -- there are a range of vehicles to use as well.

Let's review: new "Battlefield" game out today, and you can play it for free. Does anyone have any complaints about this? No? Oh, I see. You're not answering because you're already gunning your friends down online. Good show.
