'Magicka: Vietnam' Is Two Weeks Away

If you haven't played "Magicka" then you're missing out. It's a PC game, so you'll need to be able to run it first. It's no "Crysis," but the variety of dazzlingly explosive effects that are on display require a decent amount of horsepower. The game is all about magic; using it, combining it, being careful not to blow yourself up with it. There's no mana bar or anything like that, just the constant danger of accidentally obliterating yourself. This danger doubles (or more) when you add co-op players to the mix. Now Arrowhead Game Studios has set a release date for its upcoming, and totally bizarre, "Magicka" add-on, "Magicka: Vietnam."

No, this is not an April Fool's joke.

The DLC add-on arrives on April 12 and, in a cool twist, only the host will need to own it for any "Vietnam"-set co-op games, a press release on Arrowhead's website reveals. The add-on pack serves up a new adventure for Wizard GIs (up to four), who must fight their way into Goblin-Cong territory in a mission to rescue POWs from a prison camp. The pack also includes a new survival challenge map as well as newly added spell effects inspired by the add-on setting's theater of war.

It's sort of difficult to describe the joys of "Magicka" to those who haven't played it. The game is played from a top-down perspective with a mouse and a large section of the computer's keyboard. A set of letters are each assigned to various spell effects: individual elements, arcane, healing, etc. You stack up a set of spell effects and then tap a button to cast it, hopefully without destroying yourself in the process.

Though in a game like this, failure can be exceedingly entertaining. Especially where there are four players on the screen who have all just been blown to bits because one of them accidentally cast an area effect spell in their immediate vicinity.
