'Mortal Kombat: Rebirth' Photos Show Off Scorpion's Harpoon

From moment one, everything having to do with Kevin Tancheroen's "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth" web series has been cognizant of the power of the Internet audience. All the way back to the initial pitch, an independently produced YouTube short film which put the idea to the people who matter -- the fans -- rather than a group of execs gathered in a studio boardroom. Tancheroen continues to dialogue directly with the fans now, as "Rebirth" goes into production, most recently with tweets pointing to photos taken on the set.

The pics aren't terribly revealing, but it's clear they were chosen by someone who understands the game series and knows what we want to see. Coolest of all is a close-up look at what is almost certainly Scorpion's "Get over here!" harpoon, pictured above.

There's no word yet on when the gritty re-imagining will launch its 10-part web series. The story follows Scorpion (Anthony Dale), who is dispatched by Jax (Michael Jai White) and Sonya (Jeri Ryan), as he infiltrates an underground fighting tournament and brings down its master, Shang Tsung. Scorpion's personal vendetta against Sub-Zero will also factor into the story.

Tancheroen co-wrote the web series with "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" writers Todd and Aaron Helbing. A number of other notable "Mortal Kombat" characters are expected to appear as well, including Mileena, Kabal, Kitana, Liu Kang and Durak. The new back-to-basics "Mortal Kombat" hits stores on April 19.

With the web series in production right now, it is probably too much to hope that we'll see the series arriving alongside it. Hopefully sometime this summer though. To check out more pictures, head over to Tancheroen's Twitter feed. While you're at it, you might as well follow him to keep up on the latest happenings as "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth" comes together.
