Films that have been converted to 3-D after the fact have been passable at best, while films like "Avatar" and (we hope) "Tron: Legacy" that were filmed with 3-D cameras have surpassed all expectations. We're glad that our long-awaited "Hobbit" will be falling into the latter category.

"The Hobbit" has had a very on-again, off-again relationship with 3-D over the past several years, but it looks like they've straightened things out thanks to Jackson's mediating. Original director Guillermo del Toro was originally open to the idea of 3-D, but later said he wouldn't be filming with a digital camera, ruling out 3-D altogether. After del Toro left, however, the 3-D rumors sprouted again, and now Jackson is happily at the helm with 30 brand-spankin'-new RED digital cameras in tow to shoot in 3-D.

If RED's brand name sounds familiar, it's probably because you've heard it associated with "The Social Network," David Fincher's "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" and even "Antichrist." The technology is still new, and we're fairly certain that this is the first time a RED camera has been used to film in three dimensions.

If "Lord of the Rings" were made in today's Hollywood, you can bet it would be given some quality 3-D treatment, so it comes as no surprise that "The Hobbit" is going this route. And we can't wait to see how all the mysterious places and magical creatures (we're looking at you, Smaug) that Bilbo and the dwarves encounter will look when rendered in three glorious dimensions.
