'Deathly Hallows: Part 1' Animation Director Ben Hibon To Direct Dark Retelling Of Peter Pan

The film had originally been acquired in 2006 for Guillermo del Toro to direct, and it's easy to see how Hibon's style matches up to the "Pan's Labyrinth" director. It sounds like "Pan" is going to be a live-action flick and not animated like Hibon's previous work, but it most likely will be highly stylized.

"Pan" is being called a "fantasy action thriller" that puts a shadowy spin on the classic story. Instead of being an evil pirate in Neverland, Captain Hook is a "haunted former police detective in pursuit of a childlike kidnapper."

It sounds like Peter Pan is said childlike kidnapper, which really sends this story in a different direction. We've seen everything from classic tellings of the tale (Disney's 1952 "Peter Pan") to those starring an adult Robin Williams (1991's "Hook") to straight-up reboots (2003's live-action "Peter Pan") to biographical flicks about the story's origins (2004's "Finding Neverland"). But never before has Peter actually been the bad guy. This interpretation is definitely something new and fresh.

Hopefully Hibon's great skill with animation will get a chance to shine through in "Pan" as well. The Tale of the Three Brothers was almost steampunk in origin, and I could see "Pan" being influenced by that as well. Now the just need to find the perfect Hook and Pan and they'll be set. Can I be the first to recommend staying with the "Potter" theme and casting Alan Rickman as the former police detective and Daniel Radcliffe as the childlike kidnapper? Yes, please!

Were you a fan of Hibon's animation style? Is this a film you're looking forward to seeing?
